1. The Promise of the Pentecost Experience

Before His ascension, Jesus promised that His followers would receive supernatural power through the Holy Spirit:
  • Luke 24:49 – “Behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.”
  • Acts 1:4–5, 8 – Jesus commanded them to wait for “the promise of the Father…ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost…ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you.”
This shows that the Pentecost experience is:
  • A promise from God
  • A baptism of the Holy Spirit
  • A source of spiritual power

2. The Fulfillment on the Day of Pentecost
The promise was fulfilled in Acts 2:
  • Acts 2:1–4 – “And when the day of Pentecost was fully come…they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
Key elements of the Pentecost experience:
  • They were all filled (not just leaders)
  • The Holy Spirit came upon them
  • They spoke in other tongues as evidence of the Spirit’s infilling

3. The Meaning of the Experience
Peter explained what happened using prophecy:
  • Acts 2:16–17 – “This is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel… I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh.”
This reveals:
  • It was a fulfillment of prophecy (Joel 2:28–29)
  • It was for all people, not just a select group

4. The Response Required
When the crowd asked what they must do, Peter gave a clear, biblical response:
  • Acts 2:38 – “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
This outlines the full Pentecostal response:
  1. Repentance (turning from sin)
  2. Water baptism in Jesus’ name
  3. Receiving the Holy Ghost

5. The Evidence of Receiving the Holy Spirit
The initial sign of the Pentecost experience in Acts is speaking in tongues:
  • Acts 10:44–46 – Gentiles received the Holy Ghost and “spake with tongues, and magnified God.”
  • Acts 19:6 – “The Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.”
This demonstrates consistency:
  • When people received the Holy Spirit, there was observable evidence

6. The Promise Is for All
The Pentecost experience was not limited to the first believers:
  • Acts 2:39 – “For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.”
This means:
  • It is available today
  • It extends to future generations
  • It is for everyone God calls

7. The Purpose of the Pentecost Experience
The Holy Spirit empowers believers to:
  • Live a transformed life (Romans 8:9–11)
  • Be witnesses (Acts 1:8)
  • Experience spiritual renewal and guidance (John 16:13)
